Advocacy
IPMS works with legislators and policy makers locally and nationally to provide legislative advocacy on issues important to the podiatric profession. Through its members and friends, IPMS is constantly working to increase access to medical care and to improve the team approach to healthcare.

Podiatric Compact
IPMS is currently pursuing legislation to adopt the Podiatric Medical Licensure Compact. This will make it easier for podiatrists in other states to come practice in Iowa, simplifying the licensing process and expanding care in our state.
HF930 (formerly HSB291) which would enact the interstate podiatric medical licensure compact was introduced and made it unanimously out of the State Government subcommittee and full committee but failed to make it on the House debate calendar before the second funnel deadline. However, since the 2025 legislative session is the first in the two-year general assembly, the bill can be taken up again without having to be introduced during the 2026 legislative session.
Practicing across state lines has long presented significant challenges for podiatric physicians. The current system requires practitioners to navigate multiple licensing processes — each with its own paperwork, fees, and timelines — creating substantial barriers to care delivery.
These barriers particularly impact:
- Patients in medically underserved communities
- Individuals with complex conditions requiring specialized care
- Those who could benefit from podiatric telemedicine services
The forthcoming Interstate Podiatric Medical Licensure Compact represents a significant advancement for the profession and the patients we serve. This innovative program will allow qualified podiatric physicians to practice in multiple states through a streamlined application process.
Legislative Day
Each year the Iowa Podiatric Medical Society holds a reception in the State Capitol.
This is an opportunity for members to reach out to legislators in person and discuss our issues and legislation that impacts our profession.
